This new and growing site chronicles the efforts of a group of scholars (led by editor and chief translator Dr. James W. Tabor, Chair of the Religion Department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte) who are undertaking "a decades-long effort to produce an entirely new and independent English translation of both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament known as the Transparent English Bible (TEB)." Early on, Dr. Tabor provided
four reasons as to how this translation will be different and important:
- "This will be the first Bible ever produced which will put all the books of both the Old Testament and the New Testament in their proper, original, manuscript order. Although the number and content of the books remains the same, their grouping and order will be significantly different. This order, once restored, will immediately reveal an amazing pattern and form to the entire collection of scriptures that has been completely lost in all modern versions."
- "The English translation will be impeccably accurate. To whatever degree is possible this translation will avoid interpretation, while still reflecting the best standards of modern Biblical scholarship."
- "This version will be refreshingly non-ecclesiastical. By adhering to an absolutely literal translation method (for example, the word 'atonement' simply means 'covering,' while the word 'angel' literally means 'messenger'), the theological baggage of centuries of church-dominated translations will be thrown off."
- "This Bible will be filled with extensive textual, and linguistic notes. These notes will be unlike any found in the typical 'Study Bible' on the market. They will not be theologically or doctrinally oriented, nor will they attempt to interpret the meaning of a given text. They will provide the reader with background on matters of vocabulary, grammar, and textual readings."
Included in this Web site are a sample of the new Bible translation (
Genesis 1-12 ), Dr. Tabor's
translation notes, and
news and updates about the progress of the project.

PAM DEWEY
|
Pam Dewey, author of the highly informative book Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion (and co-author of two books with Ronald Dart; see above), is working on many wonderful educational and inspirational projects (alone and with partners) that are documented on the Web:
- Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion is the site that documents the work behind and beyond the book.
- Find-God.org, an evangelism and
discipleship website started by Pastor Jeff Osborn and sponsored by the Terre Haute, Indiana COG, for which Pam is the primary contributor and editor.
- The Nitpicker's Guide to the Galaxy of COG Doctrinal Debates, which contains articles that (while not offered as comprehensive treatments of the topics) are intended to be helpful overviews and to provide background information on the historical development of each debate within the Sabbatarian COG world.
- Faith Networks magazine, a monthly publication which provides inspirational and exhortational articles by a wide variety of COG authors, for which Pam is an associate editor.
- The Oasis, Pam’s web home to a growing collection of articles on basic doctrinal topics including Sabbath, Holy Days, holidays, "everburning hell", angels and more, for use in evangelism and discipleship outreaches.

DR. SAMUELE BACCHIOCCHI (1938-2008) |
Presented here is a series of essays from the late Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi, formerly Professor of Theology and Church History at Andrews University, who was widely acknowledged as the greatest scholar and author in the SDA church in his time. Even when I disagreed with his conclusions, I had (and continue to have) only the highest respect for his scholarship, erudition, and integrity. He is sorely missed.
In a 1998 letter to the church concerning the Christian Sabbath and the Lord's Day, Pope John Paul II advocated that Christians strive to ensure that civil legislation respects a "duty to keep Sunday holy." As a service to its readers, WATCH:JERUSALEM newsletter has reproduced both the Pope's letter in its entirety, as well as a rebuttal by Dr. Bacchiocchi.
