6. Whitmel (or Whitman) PROCTOR ⁽²⁾⁽⁹⁾ was born in 1829 in Edgecombe Co., NC.^{(2) (9)} He appeared on the census in 1860 in Tarboro, Edgecombe Co., NC. He died in 1872 in Edgecombe Co., NC. ⁽²⁾ He served in the military in the Civil War in NC 17th Inf. (2nd Org.) Co.I (CSA).⁽¹⁰⁾ His "date and place of enlistment [are] not known," and he was "discharged on or about May 24, 1862 for unknown reason." (source: NC Troops, 1861-1865, Vol. VI, Infantry) Various sources spell his name "Whitmel" or "Whitmell." The family Bible of his grandson, John Whitman Proctor, lists his name as "Whitman."

He was married to Betsy Elizabeth WILLIAMS (daughter of Wiley (or Willie) WILLIAMS and Susan PITT) on 8 Jun 1853 in Edgecombe Co., NC. ^{(2)(1) (11)} The marriage was performed by William F Mercer, Justice of the Peace. Betsy Elizabeth WILLIAMS ⁽²⁾ was born about 1832 in Edgecombe Co., NC. ⁽²⁾ She died before 1896 in Edgecombe Co., NC. ⁽²⁾ Whitmel (or Whitman) PROCTOR and Betsy Elizabeth WILLIAMS had the following children:
